We I first saw this Air Jordan 1 conceived by Nike SB, I thought about the transition from the 1980s to the 1990s, exemplified by the 1991 NBA Finals. After all the colorway is set in Los Angeles Lakers’ purple and gold but with wear, the paint wears off to transition to a Chicago Bulls colorway.
Now as the sneaker is getting ready to drop on the 25th of May, Nike has dubbed the sneaker “LA to Chicago”. This is a stretch, but that reminds me of Sade’s Smooth Operator (and a classic Snoop verse).
Here is Nike’s official description of the sneaker…
Basketball was not the only culture affected by the Air Jordan I in 1985. As icons like Lance Mountain began skateboarding in the AJI, it became a part of skate culture. This year, the SB x AJI “Defiant Is” pays homage to parallel cities in Jordan Brand and skateboarding history. “LA to Chicago” brings together two cities who kicked off the origins of modern-day skateboarding and greatness while tying in iconic color references.
The sneaker is now active on Nike USA’s SNKRS app at a $175 price tag.
